Hip-Hop 101

Hip-hop is undoubtedly one of the most dominant currents to date all round the largest cities in the world and in Quebec, it is not the talent that is lacking. With artists like Loud, Alaclair Ensemble, Rymz, Manu Militari, Dramatik, Without Pressure, FouKi and Dubmatique, we can definitely boast of having many great talents among us!
So that you learn more about these Quebec artists who will visit us this summer, here is a short summary of their different careers :
Loud
Loud was previously part of the Quebec band Loud Lary Adjust, but the rapper has recently pursued his solo career ! He also released his first album Une Année Record in October 2017, which has been very successful, thanks to his hit song Nouveau Riche. After performing several old out shows last year, he is definitely an artist to watch !
Alaclair Ensemble
This group was officially launched in 2010 when Watson, Vlooper, KenLo Craqnuques, Claude Bégin, Robert Nelson, Eman and Mash came together to form Alaclair Ensemble. Their greatest hits include titles like Ça Que C’tait, Alaclair High, St-Roch, Fussy Fuss and Les Infameux. They also won the prize for Hip-Hop Album of the Year at the L’ADISQ Gala in 2017.
Rymz
Rymz, whose real name is Remi Daoust, is undoubtedly one of Quebec’s rappers who has one of the largest online presence with more than 5 million views on Youtube and 20,000 fans on Facebook. He has performed on some of the biggest stages in Quebec, such as the Francofolies de Montréal, the FEQ, the FME, and many more. With five albums under his belt, Rymz has had very impressive career so far.
Manu Militari
After being part of the group Rime Organisé for several years, Manu Militari released his first solo album in 2006. That same year, he was nominated at the ADISQ Gala for Hip Hop Album of the Year and for Composer of the Year. He also won the Felix for Hip Hop Album of the Year in 2010 for his album Crime d’Honneur released in 2009. The video for his song Un Ours Mal Léché is his most viewed video on his Youtube channel with more than 2 million views.
Dramatik
Dramatik, who is a Canadian rapper of Haitian descent, founded the group Muzion in 1996 with whom Wyclef Jean (who will be at the Beachclub on June 30th) collaborates in 2004 for his song 24 Heures À Vivre. This collaboration definitely does not go unnoticed and shortly after its release, members of the group decide to focus on their solo career. Dramatik released his first solo album in 2009, followed by his album Radiothérapie in 2014.
Sans Pression
In its early days, Sans Pression was composed of two members, Kamenga Mbikay and Ti-Kid Frodè alias Komokai, who was only part of the group’s first album (514-50 dans mon réseau). After Komokai’s departure, Sans Pression released several albums, including Vagabond Ma Religion in 2013. In 2005, he opened for the Black Eyed Peas at the Bell Center, and he recently released a cover of Ed Sheeran’s hit song Shape Of You titled Sans Pression Chu T’en Amour Avec Le Money on Youtube. He is undoubtedly one of the leaders of Quebec’s hip-hop movement.
Fouki
In 2018, FouKi is named among the 10 young artists to watch in 2018 by the team of the show Plus on est de fous, plus on lit on ICI Radio-Canada Première. After he finally caught the attention of the renowned label 7ième Ciel, which also supports artists such as Alaclair Ensemble, Dramatik, Koriass and Manu Militari, the rapper’s debut album, Zay, is finally released in 2018.
Dubmatique
Last June, the group Dubmatique, composed of Jérôme-Philippe Bélinga (Disoul), Ousmane Traoré (OTMC) and Alain Benabdallah (DJ Choice), celebrated its 20th anniversary, marked by the release of their debut album La force de comprendre in 1997. It is also this album that allows them to come out of the shadows and become pillars of Quebec’s rap industry. Although the members of the group parted ways, they reunited in 2009 for the production of their album Trait d’union.
